Police station evacuated

1 min read

The Hastings Police station has been evacuated after a member of the public brought a hand grenade into the building this morning.

The Hastings man found the grenade in his back garden.  He wrapped it up in plastic material and brought it into the station just before 11am.  It is not known if the grenade is live or not.  The police station has been evacuated and prisoners being held in the cells have been transferred to the Napier police station.

The Defence Force bomb squad is en-route to Hastings from Wellington to examine the grenade.  Meanwhile, the public are urged to stay away from the Railway Rd station and if necessary, they can visit the Napier police station for any matters.

The station is likely to be closed for most of the day.
