Search for man missing in Waikato River

1 min read

A search is underway for a 36-year-old man who fled Police in Hamilton.

About 11pm yesterday, Police went to an address in Montgomery Crescent looking for the man in relation to a serious assault on a 26-year-old woman earlier in the evening.

The man, already wanted on other matters, ran from the address.  A Police dog tracked him to the edge of the Waikato River, near the Cobham Bridge.

The river and its banks were searched with the assistance of the Police boat and Eagle helicopter.  About an hour later, the man was located in the water but disappeared from sight before Police were able to reach him.

Police are liaising with the missing man’s family and continue to search the Waikato River today.

The man’s name will not be released at this stage.

The injured woman remains in hospital.

An update will be provided later today.
