Southern concert-goers - don't be fooled by ticket scams!

1 min read

Pink might have been and gone from Dunedin, but there are still plenty of big events coming up in Southern District over the next few months.

Sadly there are some members of our community who seek to use these events as an opportunity to make a quick buck by scamming people looking for tickets.

This is not isolated to Dunedin or Southern District – it happens right around New Zealand - and unfortunately people fall victim to these scams on a regular basis.

The types of scams vary – the tickets could be fake, you might pay cash but never receive a ticket, or the ticket may vary from what you thought you were purchasing.

There have also been situations where the ticket purchased was legitimate, but the “seller” of the ticket still attended the concert – so when the person who bought the ticket on social media arrived at the concert, they were declined entry as the ticket had already been used.

Netsafe has some excellent advice on how to avoid falling victim to these types of scams: https://www.netsafe.org.nz/event-ticket-scams/

But in summary – do not purchase goods from anyone without confirming identity to a level you are satisfied with. Never direct money into another account without verifying who they are. And if an offer seems too good to be true, it often is.
