Southern District's new road policing manager, Inspector Tania Baron

The appointment of a new Road Policing Manager marks a milestone for Southern District with Inspector Tania Baron being the first woman to step into the top road policing role for the region.

Inspector Baron is a Dunedin local and looks forward to the challenge of leading the road policing team across the district to continue to improve safety on our roads.

“Our district has the largest road network in the country with  thousands of kilometres of highways,” says Inspector Baron. “Everyday our people are out there ensuring our roads remain safe by being visible, enforcing the road rules, and educating drivers on their behaviour.

“My vision is for our roads to be the safest in the country and our team will take a strong stance on unacceptable behaviour. But we cannot do it alone.

“We need the public’s help – whether it’s stopping a drunk driver getting behind the wheel, reporting instances of dangerous driver, or simply making sure you plan your journey and drive fresh so you reach your destination safely – road safety is the responsibility of everyone.”

Southern district commander, Superintendent Andrew Coster, says he is delighted to have Inspector Baron as part of the district leadership team.

“Tania has shown herself to be an extremely competent leader and manager,” said Superintendent Coster. “She combines solid operational policing experience and a strong strategic ability.

“I am confident that, as the road policing manager, Tania will position Southern Police to have the greatest possible impact on road safety outcomes.”

Inspector Baron has previously held a range of roles in Dunedin, including frontline policing, youth, prosecutions and leading case management across the district.
