1 min read

Taranaki Police have launched an investigation after the death of a baby girl at a residential property in Hawera today.

Police and Ambulance were called to the address and discovered the baby unresponsive. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the infant but despite their efforts she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A scene examination is underway at the property and officers are continuing to speak with the infant's family. The services of Victim Support have also been provided to the family.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brent Matuku, officer in charge of the investigation says: "At this stage we don't have a clear picture of the circumstances surrounding the baby's death; therefore we are treating it as unexplained at this stage."

A post mortem is scheduled for tomorrow.

No further information is available at this stage. A further update will be issued tomorrow.
