Tourist rescued from Tararua Crossing

1 min read

A 19-year-old tourist who became stranded in bad weather on the Tararua Crossing has been rescued by Police Search and Rescue.

The man called Police on the afternoon of Sunday 22 July from Mt Atkinson after finding himself in physical difficulty because of the cold, wet conditions.

High winds, sleet and dropping temperatures meant SAR was not immediately able to reach the man, so he was advised to retrace his steps to Kime hut nearby where he would have access to food and warmth while waiting for help to arrive.

SAR continued to monitor the changeable weather and the man was successfully rescued by helicopter on the morning of Tuesday 24 July.

Wellington District SAR Coordinator Sergeant Anthony Harmer said it was important for tourists to remember that walking or tramping in New Zealand can be very different to other countries.

“It’s not clear if this young man knew how close he came to being in real danger. Our thanks goes to the skill and efforts of SAR staff and LandSAR volunteers who were prepared to put themselves into the hills to save a life.

“New Zealand alpine conditions are often underestimated. If you or people you know are tramping in the outdoors it’s essential you plan your trip, tell someone where you are going, be aware of the weather, know your limits and take sufficient supplies.”
