Update - Armed Police response in New Plymouth

One person is in custody following an incident in New Plymouth today.

Police attended what was initially believed to be a family harm matter after it was identified a man had breached bail by going to an address in the suburb of Spotswood. 

As the man was known to carry firearms and there was concern for others, armed Police were dispatched as a precaution.    

The man was located at a property on Paritutu Road. 

One person at the address left in the early afternoon.

However, the man refused to leave and Police began negotiations.

Just before 9pm, Police entered the address and arrested the offender.

Charges are expected to be laid overnight.

Cordons at the Spotswood address have now been stood down.
