Cordons remain in place in the Main Street, Cook Street and Johnston Street areas of Foxton following reports of shots heard in the area.
Police were called to the scene, south-west of Palmerston North, at approximately 7:30pm by members of the public.
The Armed Offenders Squad are in attendance.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area but diversions are in place for those passing through State Highway 1.
Residents should remain indoors until told otherwise.
