Canterbury Police are now able to name the victim of a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred shortly after 7.30am yesterday (19 March 2015) morning a short distance from the intersection of SH73 West Coast Rd and Miners Rd.  He was 64 year old local man Ian William Clarke.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.  Canterbury Police, Victim Support and his employer are working to support his family who are, understandably, extremely upset at their sudden and tragic loss.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash was discharged from hospital yesterday afternoon.

Canterbury Police and Serious Crash Unit investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.

Ian’s family have provided the following statement:

“We are still coming to terms with the tragic loss of Ian, known to his friends and colleagues as Hairy Wire Whiskers and Uncle Nitty.  He had a huge involvement in all things vintage, cars, motorbikes and steam engines.  He was a loving man with a very creative, one-of-a-kind authentic personality.  Ian did anything for anybody and was extremely proud of his whole family.  We request privacy while we are grieving and ask that the media do not attend his funeral or approach any of his mourners.”

Department of Corrections have provided the following statement:

It’s with great sadness that I have learned of the death of one of our staff in Christchurch. He was a long serving, highly respected staff member at Corrections.  Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends and those who worked with him at this very difficult time.

Canterbury Police will not be making any further comment on this ongoing investigation.
