Waikato Police Road safety message

1 min read

Police are urging all drivers to become ‘safe drivers’ to ensure safer families.  This call comes on the back of six crashes reported in the space of three hours, one of them a fatal crash.

Emergency services were called to State Highway One, just south of Hydro Road at approximately 6pm to a two car head on crash.

It is too early to speculate on the cause of the crash, the Waikato Serious Crash Unit are investigating.

At this point we believe two vehicles, each with two occupants have collided head-on. A passenger of one of the vehicles died at the scene while others were taken to Waikato Hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

An hour later there were two further crashes in the district, one in Matamata where there were no injuries reported, and one in Huntly, where there were minor injuries reported, while not as serious as the Karapiro crash, all crashes have the potential to cause devastation to families.

Safety is the message and adjusting your driving to suit the conditions.  At 7.30pm a vehicle using the diversion in place for the Karapiro incident, crashed on Whitehall Road.  This was a single car crash, and the driver had been taken from the scene prior to Police attending.

As the festive season approaches everyone using the roads need to ensure they are safe drivers, road safety is no accident, and we want to make sure that all of the family is around the table to celebrate Christmas.
