Wellington commuters advised of severe delays

1 min read

Police are advising Wellington commuters to delay their drive home where possible, as traffic heading out of the city is gridlocked.

Flooding forced the earlier closure of State Highway 1 at Plimmerton and the road isn't expected to reopen until flood waters subside, which may take several hours.

State Highway 2 northbound now has one lane open, but there are currently tailbacks to the city. Both lanes are open southbound.

Police are urging motorists to check NZTA travel updates before embarking on their journey and to please take extra care on the roads. We'd also like to thank all drivers in advance for their patience.

Anyone planning to travel by train or bus is advised to check with Metlink first as services have been impacted by the weather-related slips and flooding.
