Shared Intel behind crime reduction programmes

Police and Mäori shared Intel is being used in Auckland City District to develop relevant and practical action plans to reduce Mäori offending, re-offending and victimisation.

Senior Sergeant Huri Dennis, Mäori Responsiveness Advisor for Auckland City District, says three programmes have been implemented and one is in planning mode.

“While we have yet to see the fruits of our programmes, we believe we have sufficiently planned and consulted to even the odds of success,” Huri says.

The three Auckland City District programmes include:

Mäori Domestic Violence:

An ongoing shared partnership with an external Mäori Service provider based on Tikanga Mäori. Long-term prevention programmes and initiatives are provided to the district’s ‘top 10’ Mäori offenders.

Mäori Youth Crime – Central City Business Area:

An operational partnership has been entered into with Te Matapihi Tirohanga Mäori Wardens targeting Mäori youth crime issues within the CBD. Targets for 2004/05 include unlawful taking, theft ex-car and minor street violence. See Ten-One No 266 for a full story on this initiative.

Öräkei Community Safety Group:

An ongoing initiative led by Ngäti Whatua o Öräkei sees a safety group established to address volume crime within the Öräkei community. Targets for 2004/05 are burglary, crime and safety issues.
