Dog Section turns 50
On 6-7 October the NZ Police Dog Section will celebrate its 50th anniversary.
“It will be an opportunity to meet old friends, revive memories
and tour the Dog Training Centre where there have been many changes in
recent years,” says National Coordinator: Police Dogs Inspector
Brendon Gibson.
“Photographs and memorabilia capturing our history will be on
display during the anniversary and if people have any images or information
to contribute it would be very welcome.”
Recent developments at the Dog Training Centre include a new cemetery
area, a new parade ground and a feature wall and statue to celebrate
the 50th anniversary.
The NZ Police Dog Section was formed in 1956 when Constable Frank Riley
was seconded from the Surrey County Police to develop police dog training
in New Zealand.
He brought with him four German Shepherd dogs and 12 pups and with the
assistance of Constables Alan Symes and Colin Guppy the Dog Training
School was established in Trentham and courses were underway by 1957. |
