Police Commissioner welcomes report by Mary Scholtens QC

1 min read

Police welcomes the report by Mary Scholtens QC into the appointment process for a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush says he received the report from the Department of Internal Affairs earlier today.

“It is good to have the Inquiry completed.  I have said all along that I welcomed the Inquiry and that I looked forward to the clarification of matters raised regarding the appointment of Deputy Commissioner Haumaha.

“I acknowledge the findings of the report that the process followed to appoint the Deputy Commissioner was sound and that there was no available and relevant information omitted from the process.

“I also acknowledge the comments made by Mary Scholtens QC that Louise Nicholas and Wally Haumaha are “both passionate, both effective. They have both made driving culture change within police their life’s work.”

“Public trust and confidence is extremely important to NZ Police.  It is entirely appropriate that these matters have been assessed and examined by an independent Inquiry.

An IPCA investigation into allegations of bullying involving Deputy Commissioner Haumaha is currently still underway.

“This means I am limited in what I can say regarding some aspects of the report until the IPCA investigation is complete.”
