Rodney Police have applauded the actions of a local man whose quick thinking resulted in the arrest of two youths for the attempted robbery of a Whangaparaoa dairy today.
Police say that about 12.30pm Tuesday 16 December 2008 two 16 year old males armed with knives entered the Vipond dairy in Vipond Road on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.
Both offenders were disguised. One remained at the entrance to the shop while his associate threatened the Korean dairy owner with a knife and demanded cash.
The male owner repelled his attacker and chased both youths out of his store. Nobody was injured and the two offenders left the dairy empty handed.
Prior to the attempted robbery a local security guard has seen the two youths acting suspiciously. When he saw both offenders running from the store he acted quickly. He caught, disarmed, and held them until the police arrived.
Police say the assistance from this particular member of the public was most valuable and his actions were instrumental in the early arrest of both youths.
They are now in police custody and will appear in the North Shore District Court tomorrow. Both have been charged with Assault with Intent to Rob. The maximum penalty for this offence is 14 years imprisonment
