Waikato Police urge motorists to switch on

1 min read

With the onset of winter and the inherent reduction in daylight hours Waikato Police vehicles will be transiting the District with there headlights on to enhance their profile and officers are asking motorists to do the same.

The call comes after the death of a woman on SH1 at Meremere in an intersection crash about 8pm on Sunday.

Waikato Road Policing Manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, said though investigators were yet to complete their investigation initial indications are the crash happened when a westbound Mitsubishi van failed to give way at a controlled intersection.

"The van has been crossing the southbound lanes of SH1 with the driver intending to turn north but it has driven into the path of a southbound Range Rover vehicle.

"The driver of the van, 36-year-old Cynthia Christina HILGERS of Tuakau, died in the crash."

Mr Tooman said the crash, which was the first fatality on that stretch of SH1 since the realignment of the road and the introduction of wire barriers was frustrating for Police.

"Just days ago our staff completed a joint intersection safety campaign in the Huntly sub-Area and for this tragedy to happen is frustrating for those involved.

"With winter rapidly approaching we're asking motorists to drive with their headlights on, particularly during periods of low light to increase their visibility," he said.

Sunday's crash brings the Waikato Police District's road toll to 15 compared to 20 for the same period last year.
