Incident at Hunua Falls

1 min read

At 6.01pm this evening Police were advised of an emergency at the Hunua Falls swimming hole, south of Auckland.

A group of young people were swimming when a young man in their group found himself in difficulty.    A friend of his and two members of the public attempted to come to his aid, but despite their efforts, the young man went underwater and did not surface.   Emergency services were called to the scene, including the Westpac Rescue Chopper.    The friend who had tried to reach the missing man was taken to Middlemore Hospital, where he is now in a status 3 condition.    The young man has sadly not been found and the Police National Dive Squad has been deployed and are on their way from Wellington.    The Hunua Falls swimming hole and the track into the area will be guarded overnight and there will be no access into the site in the meantime.    The name of the missing man will not be released at this stage.    ENDS   Media please note, no further update is expected to be provided tonight. A further update will be provided after 10.30am tomorrow.
