Police investigation into baby’s death

Canterbury Police can confirm that the one year old baby girl, of Fijian Indian descent, who was being treated in Christchurch ICU with a serious head injury passed away shortly before 8.30pm last night with her parents at her bedside. 

A post mortem will be carried out later today. 

Detective Senior Sergeant, Scott Anderson, says “Police and Victim Support are working with the baby’s parents who are understandably very upset at the tragic loss of their child.  The family have requested privacy while they grieve.  The baby girl was taken to hospital on Tuesday night (6 January 2015) by her regular babysitter with assistance from her neighbour”

“Scene examinations at a Worcester Street address and possibly other addresses in Christchurch will be completed today.  A homicide investigation into the serious head injuries the baby sustained is being undertaken Canterbury Police CIB.”

Canterbury Police are not in a position to make any further comment at this stage and will not speculate on what the out outcome of this ongoing investigation will be.  When Police are in a position to make further comment another media release will be made.
