Central District Police want to remind those heading out on the town this weekend to be aware of alcohol ban areas (formerly known as liquor ban areas) in light of the recent changes to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act.
Police officers can now issue alcohol infringement offence notices (AIONs) for a range of new offences, including breach of local alcohol bans, lending ID to an under-18 year-old, and presenting a fake ID ($250 per offence).
"If you are heading out for a night on the town I encourage you to become familiar with the alcohol ban areas and not make the mistake of drinking in these areas. You can avoid being infringed by simply leaving your drinks at home," says Central District Deployment Manager, Inspector Ross Grantham.
Police can search your bag if you are in, or entering, an area with an alcohol ban. If you are found drinking alcohol in an alcohol ban area Police can confiscate all of the alcohol and search you and your vehicle.
On an average day in New Zealand, 52 people are taken home or detained in police custody due to their state of intoxication and 340 offences occur where police see alcohol involved in the offending, including 100 drink-drive offences and 30 breaches of alcohol bans.
"You can have a good time out with your mates without getting drunk. Drink responsibly and leave your drinks at home before coming into town, otherwise it could turn into an expensive outing.
"We are focused on preventing people from becoming victims of alcohol related abuse. Everybody should be able to go out and have a good time, without causing harm to themselves, others, or the wider community," says Inspector Grantham.
