Frequently Asked Questions
What does Police use Twitter for?
The @Police_NZ Twitter account is a convenient way for Twitter users to receive a notification of new content on the Police website. Content published to the Twitter feed includes:
- News stories
- Featured Items
- Communications Centre Alerts
- Police Dispatch - a regularly updated blog from the Police Commissioner
Why doesn't @Police_NZ reply to Twitter Direct Messages or @Mentions?
If you need to contact Police, you probably need to speak to someone at your local Police station in person. Twitter's not a very efficient way of managing that process, so we decided not to use it that way.
In an emergency always call 111, never use Twitter!
Can I report a crime to Police via Twitter?
No. Find out how you can report a crime. If you want to anonymously report information about crime and criminals you can call the independent organisation Crimestoppers. Crimestoppers NZ's free calling number is 0800 555 111. Alternatively information can be submitted using an encrypted online form.
How much time does Police spend managing their Twitter account?
The @Police_NZ Twitter account is automated using (Hootsuite and twitterfeed.com), so Police staff spend very little time administering Twitter.
