District Commander |
Hello, Kia Ora, Talofa Lava, Malo Lelei, Nihao. As the District
Commander and I'm pleased to welcome you to the Waitematā Police District and to our website.
This is the second largest District in the country and covers the diverse area from north of the Harbour Bridge across the North Shore, up to Mangawhai, across to Helensville and Waitakere and through to New Lynn. It also encompasses the entire 106-km stretch of motorway from the Bombay Hills north to Orewa. Please feel free to view the map of the district.
We have establishment list of 639 sworn staff with 140 non-sworn staff, that provide Police services to 440,000 people, a population that is increasing rapidly and is predicted to reach 500,000 over the next four years. We are a diverse district with both urban and rural communities and a broad mix of cultures.
Our policing goals
This District has a strong record of reducing crime and resolving crime. We will continue to focus on prevention of crime, working with communities and key stakeholders to put in place effective interventions that suit the local environment. Through these actions we will provide reassurance that this District is still one of the safest communities within which to work and live.
In particular we will:
- Continually review our processes to maximise effectiveness;
- Implement a coordinated and adaptable approach;
- Look for new ideas and have the courage to try them;
- Get the basics right so that our processes are robust, efficient and professional.
Road Policing remains a key activity for Police and we will continue to target excessive speed, drunk driving and restraint wearing to reduce the number of people needlessly dying on our roads, particularly the rural roads and highways.
The additional sworn and non-sworn staff announced by the Government in May provides more flexibility to deploy staff to identified risks and improve our response and investigative capability. One of the biggest challenges to Police will be to recruit the people for those positions. Once again our focus will be to recruit locally to work locally so our staff fairly represent the communities they work in and have a real commitment to making a difference.
This District will work in a coordinated and collaborative approach with Auckland City and Counties Manukau Districts and AMCOS to address region wide offending and victimisation.
The District’s over arching philosophy will be to work collaboratively as one team; one team moving forward together in constant improvement.
