Christchurch Police are warning residents to make sure they keep their homes secure during warmer weather.
The call comes after investigators noted a number of residential burglaries that have occurred at premises that were insecure.
Detective Senior Sergeant Corrie Parnell says five burglaries were recorded during the weekend in New Brighton and Burwood at properties where doors and windows had been left open.
"Most of these burglaries took place during the day - and in some cases the victims were at home.
"Although the majority of burglaries involve forced entry through windows and doors, we are starting to see more incidents at insecure premises.
"With the warmer weather there's a temptation to leave doors and windows open but residents need to remember that this leaves their homes vulnerable to burglars.
"It's especially risky if residents are outside and can't see what's going on around their property.
"We urge people to always be security-aware. If you are heading outside to do some gardening, sunbathing or work in the garage - take a minute to lock your doors and secure your windows.
"Do the same at night when you go to bed - keep your doors and windows secure and close your curtains. Don't leave potential burglars a way in. Remember you can fit window stays so that you can still get a breeze coming through, while keeping your windows secure."
Police encourage residents to join a local Neighbourhood Support Group, and get to know their neighbours.
"And if you see any suspicious activity, people or vehicles in your neighbourhood, don't hesitate to contact Police," Detective Senior Sergeant Parnell says.
"Call 111 if it's happening now and Police will respond immediately. Descriptions and registration numbers are a great help."
