On Tuesday the 12th of January two American tourists became embroiled in a road rage incident when cycling through Newtown in Wellington. Emergency Response Manager, Inspector Paris Razos says “Last night Police arrested the driver of the vehicle involved in the incident. A 39 year old man has been charged with common assault and will appear in Wellington District Court on Wednesday.”
The unfortunate incident follows several years of partnership between Police and Wellington City Council to develop safe cycle routes and paths throughout the city. While these initiatives have generally made Wellington a safer and more enjoyable place to cycle, Wellington can still be a challenging environment for cyclists. It is up to all road users to stay alert to the needs of other road users and show common courtesy.
Inspector Razos says that while the phenomenon of road rage is unpredictable, it is also preventable. “Show understanding and courtesy for other road users. If someone becomes irate on the road, you can help prevent an incident by being patient and not getting involved. Keep a watchful eye and anticipate the needs of other road users at all times."
He adds, "Police are grateful to members of the public who helped us in the investigation. I'd also like to credit to the commitment of our officers who worked hard to reassure visitors to our city that Wellington makes every effort to keep them safe on the roads."
