Upper Hutt Police have released the name of a man who died following a fight in the city last night.

He was Stephen James Hailwood, aged 49 years, of Upper Hutt.

Detective Sergeant Murray Porter, Upper Hutt CIB, said Mr Hailwood and another man were involved in a short verbal then physical exchange outside The Coach Bar, part of the Cobb and Co complex, in Upper Hutt about 9.30 last night.

Mr Hailwood was taken to Hutt Hospital where he died in the Intensive Care Unit at 10.45am today. A post mortem will be held tomorrow.

"We have identified the other party involved in the incident and he is now part of our inquiry," Detective Sergeant Porter said. "We're not looking for anyone else in connection with the fight or Mr Hailwood's death."

Police are however keen to talk with people who saw the incident or who have information about it. Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact Upper Hutt Police.
