Waikato Police are working to establish the identity of a man whose body was found washed up on rocks north of Raglan this afternoon.

The man's body was found washed up on Te Hara Point, an isolated spot near Te Akau on the Waikato's west coast, shortly after 3pm.

Aged about 50 the man is believed to have been fishing off rocks when he has fallen into the surf and drowned.

While officers work to formally identify him Police are urging rock anglers to observe basic safety principles and always wear a lifejacket when fishing.

Further information will be released on the man's identity and the circumstances involved in his drowning once the formal identification process has been completed.
