Palmerston North Police are investigating a crash that has left one person dead and another with minor injuries.

The crash is believed to have happened overnight on Tennant Drive and involved one vehicle with two occupants.

Police were notified about the vehicles location by a member of the public at approximately 8:30am today.

Upon arriving at the scene officers located a deceased man in the vehicle.

Detective Johnny Oram of the Manawatü CIB says: "It appears the vehicle has left the road and collided with a tree before going over a small bank. The deceased man was a passenger in the vehicle and we are currently speaking with the male driver who is assisting us with our investigation."

"With support from the Serious Crash Unit we will conduct a scene examination and continue with our inquiries and area canvas in an effort to establish what factors have led to the crash."

Police will not release the deceased man's name until formal identification is complete and next of kin has been informed.

No further information is available at this stage.
