Suspicious package - Hawera Police Station

1 min read

The Police Station in Princes Street Hawera is currently closed with cordons in place after a suspicious package was found outside the front door.

A patrol returning to the station at about 8.30am this morning noticed the black briefcase sized metal box pushed up against the front door in the outside foyer area.

A military explosive ordnance disposal team has been requested and is currently enroute to the location.  It is anticipated that they will examine the package in an attempt to establish the contents.

Princes Street between Wellington and Nelson Streets is closed off.

>>>>>>>> UPDATE <<<<<<<<

A member of the public has approached local Police and confirmed that she dropped the metal case off at the Police Station after finding it lying abandoned earlier this morning.  It appears that the case contains electrical equipment and may have been discarded after a vehicle was broken into overnight in the Hawera area.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team has been stood down and all cordons are now lifted.  Police would like to thank those who may have been inconvenienced for their patience.
