Pistol carbine conversion kits – conditions to lawfully possess

There are now special requirements to lawfully possess a pistol carbine conversion kit.

A pistol carbine conversion kit:

  1. means a frame or kit that may be used to convert a pistol (not being an air pistol) that is designed or adapted to be held and fired with one hand and that has an overall length of no more than 400 millimetres into a firearm that may be fired from the shoulder; and
  2. includes a frame or kit described in paragraph (a) that is also capable of being used as an air pistol carbine conversion kit;

In addition to a firearms licence, to possess a pistol carbine conversion kit you also need to have (s22BA):

  • an endorsement which enables you to lawfully possess a pistol; and
  • either a permit to import a pistol or a permit to possess a pistol; and
  • either a permit to import a pistol carbine conversion kit or a permit to possess a pistol carbine conversion kit.

If you already have a pistol carbine conversion kit and you do not have all of the relevant documents then you can apply for them here.

If you don’t want to retain your pistol carbine conversion kit, please store it safely and securely until you are able to hand them over to Police as part of the buy-back. 

In all places in the Act where “pistol” is mentioned in a list of arms items “pistol carbine conversion kit” has been added to support these new requirements.
