Hamilton Police appealing for information following assault

Attribute to Acting Detective Sergeant Paul Van Der Zee:

Hamilton Police are investigating an assault which occurred at Knighton Primary School on the morning of Thursday 27 July, 2017.  

Around 11:00am, an unknown man is believed to have entered Knighton School grounds and assaulted a student.

The victim has been interviewed by specialist interviewers and is being supported by Police, her family and the wider school community.

Police forensic staff conducted a scene examination and have reviewed CCTV footage, and we are now asking for sightings of a man, described as Maori or Pacific Islander, aged in his 20s, in the area of Knighton Road.

We would like to hear from anyone who has information which could help us identify this offender or may have been in the area near the school grounds.

He was also seen in the Somme Crescent, Hillcrest area on 26 and 27 July, 2017, and possibly had a bicycle with him at this time.

The man is described as medium to large build, aged in his 20s, possibly with a beard or some facial hair.

At the time of the incident, he was wearing dark-coloured clothing and a dark-coloured hat or cap.

Police would like to hear from anyone who has seen a man of similar description in area acting unusual or appearing out of place.

There is a dedicated team of detectives working on this investigation and it is being treated as a priority.

The child's wellbeing the priority in this investigation and due to this, no further details will be provided on the incident.
