Kerepehi Police shooting release # 01

1 min read

The Waikato's most senior Police officer describes an incident in the east of the District overnight as a difficult and complex situation.

Acting Superintendent Greg Nicholls said Police were called to a Kaikahu Rd address in Kerepehi about 9.45pm.

"The incident was one of a domestic violence nature which escalated into an armed incident on a rural road between Ngatea and Kerepehi.

"A 50-year-old Kerepehi man was shot by Police after firing on officers after he travelled through a cordon at an intersection with SH2. Airlifted to Waikato Hospital the man was undergoing surgery this morning and he is described as being in a serious but stable condition."

Mr Nicholls said he was glad no-one else was injured during the resolution of this incident which will now be the subject of three investigations.

"Those investigations will focus on the circumstances of what has occurred, adherence to policy, procedures and practice and an Independent Police Conduct Authority investigation. The investigation will be overseen by an independent senior investigator from outside of the District."
