Nelson Bays operation checks on sale of alcohol

1 min read

A joint controlled purchase operation checking on the sale of alcohol to minors, run by Police, District Licencing Agencies and Public Health, was held on Friday 17 August and Friday 24 August 2018.

Forty-seven on- and off-licensed premises in the Nelson and Tasman areas were visited by 16-year-old volunteers.

One premises sold alcohol to these young people. Police and the Licensing Inspector will meet with management, and enforcement action will be taken through the New Zealand Alcohol Regulatory Licensing Authority.

"These operations are carried out to check processes and ensure compliance with the law by licensed premises,” says Sergeant Kyle Bruning, Alcohol Harm Prevention Officer, Nelson Bays.

“We are committed to reducing alcohol-related harm in our community, and ensuring alcohol is not being sold to underage people is a crucial component of this.

“We were pleased to discover almost all of the premises visited were complying with the law.

“We will continue carry out these types of operation over the coming months and all licensed premises are reminded to be vigilant.

“A good result is when we have no sales made to our volunteers.”
