Attribute to Acting Senior Sergeant Rob Irvine:

A regular patrol for Darfield Police led them to a trove of hidden drugs, ammunition and weapons yesterday.

Around 1.30pm, Police sighted a known offender driving while suspended on West Coast Road in Selwyn and turned on lights and sirens to signal the driver to pull over.

The driver fled instead, accelerating at speed on the highway and driving on the wrong side of the road, dramatically trying to avoid Police.

Due to the manner of driving, Police did not initiate a pursuit.

Police followed at a distance and located the offender’s home address where they found skid marks over the gravel driveway and the vehicle parked out back – with the engine and tires still burning hot.

A search of the vehicle uncovered the large amount of drugs, before more specialist staff and a Police dog unit assisted of a further search of the property.

As a result, Police seized three cannabis plants, along with LSD, 500 grams of cocaine, steroids, a box of .22 and shotgun ammunition and a high powered taser.

A 40-year-old man was arrested and will appear in the Christchurch District Court today facing a total of 12 charges, which include:

  • Reckless driving
  • Unlawfully possessing ammunition
  • Possessing for supply of cannabis plant
  • Cultivating cannabis
  • Possessing for supply of LSD
  • Possessing for supply of cocaine
  • Unlawfully possessing a restricted weapon
  • Breaches of the Medicines Act.
