The official holiday period starts at 4pm today so whether you’re staying home or travelling to be with friends and family think safety and take simple measures to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
Canterbury Road Policing Manager, Inspector Al Stewart, says “As part of the national focus during the ‘Safe Summer’ campaign Canterbury Police will be strictly enforcing the alcohol and speed limits on our roads. We’ll also be targeting those using their phone, not wearing safety belts and erratic/dangerous driving that puts road users at risk”
Last week, as part of Canterbury’s Operation Capricorn, additional Police were rostered on to run checkpoints and increase the profile of patrols in entertainment areas across the District. This operation will continue until the end of January 2015.
Indicative statistics from across the District show we can still do more in the community to reduce the instances of driving while over the new alcohol limit. 7011 Compulsory Breath Tests (CBTs) were conducted at checkpoints throughout the District on Friday and Saturday last week. Six returned Excess Breath Alcohol (EBA) results between 250-400mcg, exceeding the new lower limit, and 16 an EBA above 400mcg. In Timaru four out of 147 CBTs resulted in an EBA of over 400mcg, in Ashburton only one EBA out of 743 CBTs exceeded the new limit.
“While these figures may appear low overall, it is disappointing to see so many people still drinking before they get behind the wheel. We encourage everyone to plan how they are going to get home before they leave for a party. Book a taxi early or nominate a sober driver in the group who can take you home at the end of your celebrations.” explained Inspector Stewart.
“Over the summer drive to the conditions, stay alert and take regular breaks particularly on long journeys. Allow extra time for your road trips, be patient and check twice before entering an intersection or performing a u-turn. The official holiday period starts this afternoon and we need your help to keep our roads safe. Call *555 from a mobile to report dangerous or erratic driving and always call 111 in an emergency.”
“In Canterbury we take an ‘anytime anywhere’ approach to road safety. Check your speed and remember a posted speed limit is a maximum not a target! If you’re travelling with children please make sure they are restrained in an age appropriate child seat and passengers are wearing their safety belts.”
