Manage your firearms

You should report a firearms licence or permit as missing, destroyed or mutilated by calling the Police non-emergency 105 number or visiting your nearest police station.

To obtain a replacement, you will need to pay a Replacement Firearms Licence fee at any New Zealand PostShop and take the receipt to your nearest police station.

On application, and on proof to the satisfaction of Police by a statement in writing, statutory declaration or other evidence that a licence or permit has been lost, destroyed, mutilated or has become illegible, Police will issue a duplicate of the licence or permit, or a new licence (Arms Regulations, reg32).

If any firearm, prohibited magazine, prohibited part, or restricted weapon, is lost the owner must immediately report the loss to Police. The owner must provide all information in their possession relating to the firearm(s) and the circumstances of the loss to Police (Arms Act, s66A).

The quickest way to report a lost firearm is to contact Police using the 105 Online Reporting form, selecting Reporting firearms matters option; or by calling the Police non-emergency 105 phone line.

Alternatively you can contact your local firearms office directly. Find the contact details for the nearest office on the firearms offices and contact details page.

If any firearm, prohibited magazine, prohibited part, or restricted weapon, is stolen the owner must immediately report the theft to Police. The owner must provide all information in their possession relating to the firearms and the circumstances of the theft (Arms Act, s66A).

If you have a firearm, magazine, part, or ammunition that you no longer want and wish to hand over to Police, you are able to do so.

Please contact your local firearms office to organise a suitable time to hand in your firearm item/s. Please do not turn up to a station unannounced. It is important that you ensure firearms are not loaded and to transport them safely using a gun case or similar bag.

Considering destroying a firearm

If you are considering destruction of a firearm you can contact your local Arms Office to discuss options, including arranging to hand the item in and have Police undertake the destruction of the item for you.

I have already destroyed a firearm or part

If any firearm, prohibited magazine, prohibited part, or restricted weapon, has been destroyed the owner must immediately report the destruction to a member of Police. The owner must give Police all information in their possession relating to the destruction (Arms Act, s66A).

The quickest way to report the destruction of a firearm is to contact Police via the 105 Online Reporting form, selecting Reporting firearms matters option; or by calling the Police non-emergency 105 phone line.

When reporting a destruction you must provide details including; your full name, firearms licence number, manufacturer, make; model; serial number, calibre, why and how the firearm or item was destroyed, and attach any relevant documentation and / or photos of the item before and after destruction.

If the firearm was a pistol, a pistol carbine conversion kit, a prohibited arms item, or a restricted weapon, once you have made the report Police will be in contact with you to follow up your report and arrange collection or delivery of the destroyed item/s for disposal by Police.

If you have recently changed your health practitioner, you will need to inform Police by providing the name and contact details of your new health practitioner.
