All firearms licence holders must meet requirements for the safe and secure storage and transportation of firearms and ammunition. There are additional security conditions for endorsement holders who own pistols, restricted weapons, and prohibited firearms or prohibited magazines.

Changes to legislation
On 1 February 2022, the Arms Amendment Regulations 2021 came into force. The Arms Amendment Regulations 2021 makes several updates to the Arms Regulations 1992.
The updates to Arms Regulations 1992 support changes to the Arms Act 1983 made in 2020, with the aim to improve firearms safety and keep the public safe from firearms harm.
The updates to Arms Regulations 1992 aim to help firearms licence holders better understand their compliance requirements and legal obligations.
Changes to firearm and ammunition storage and transportation requirements
The Arms Amendment Regulations 2021 introduced further changes to firearms storage requirements.
The following areas of firearms storage are affected by the changes to legislation:
- premises and buildings
- secure storage requirements for mobile homes, caravans and campervans
- security requirements for firearms and ammunition in vehicles during transportation
- carriage of firearms on public transport.
