Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is a technology used to automatically read motor vehicle number plates by use of optical character recognition. Police uses ANPR technology for a range of enforcement, staff safety and public safety purposes. This chapter sets out policy principles for the collection, retention, use and disposal of Police owned number plate information (NPI); Police use of NPI collected by third party operators; guidance and examples of approved ANPR use; and the Governance and Assurance Reporting model.

Safe and ethical use of algorithm report and related documents

Review of new technology proposals

This report reviews proposals that have been assessed against the Policy by considering their lifecycle
and feedback from Technology Assurance’s internal stakeholders. The review included a qualitative
assessment of the feedback from 20 technology proposals considered during the period 2021-2023,
which allowed us to identify key policy and process improvements.
