The overnight burglary of The Herne Bay Veterinary Clinic has Auckland City Police concerned that whoever broke in, is in possession of some lethal drugs.
Access to the clinic at 159 Jervois Rd, Herne Bay, was via a window at the back of the property, sometime between 8.45pm and 9pm last evening.
A number of anaesthetic drugs were stolen, including two 250ml bottles of pentobarb 300 – enough to kill at least 25 large Rottweiler dogs.
Constable Philip Dean of the Avondale Law Enforcement Team says the pentobarb was in brown 250ml bottles and is a light blue liquid of thin consistency.
"We encourage anyone who might know where it is, to deliver it to a Police station or to take it to a chemist, doctor or veterinary clinic for appropriate disposal," Mr Dean said.
"If even a comparatively small amount was swallowed, we’ve been advised that at best it would make someone very sick but that the result could be fatal, especially if a child was to accidentally ingest it."
Some of the other anaesthetic drugs taken were ketamine, pethadine, domitor (and its "reversal" drug antisedan), zoletil, zolazepam and a reversal agent, atropine sulphate.
