Police seek details of man's movements prior to canal crash in Hauraki District

Eastern Waikato Police investigating the death of a farm worker found trapped in a submerged vehicle in a canal in the Hauraki Plains are appealing for sightings of the man's vehicle prior to the crash.

The body of Lee Clint DEY, 23, was recovered from his dark green coloured 1993 Honda Accord when it was pulled from the Awaiti Canal yesterday.

The crash is currently under investigation by the Waikato Serious Crash Unit and initial indications are that Mr DEY'S car failed to stop or turn at a T-intersection running alongside the canal and instead travelled straight into the water.

Sergeant Jim Corbett of the Thames Strategic Traffic Unit the focus for the investigation was establishing Mr DEY'S movements.

"He hadn't been seen on Sunday and shortly before his car was discovered in the canal his father had reported him missing to Paeroa Police.

"We're now trying to establish his movements prior to the crash and are asking anyone who may recall seeing Mr DEY on Sunday or recalls seeing a dark green Honda Accord in the area to make contact with the Paeroa Police on 07 862 8744."
