Police investigating the brutal death of Karori man Tony Stanlake are hoping photos of his car may jog memories from people seeing it around the city, particularly in the days leading up to and after his death.
Mr Stanlake's car is a 1994 blue three-door Ford Laser TX3i hatchback, with a thin red trim running around the bumper bars and lower body panels. The car's registration number is SU472.
Detective Inspector Mike Arnerich, head of the Operations Red Rocks homicide, says police found Mr Stanlake's car locked in the garage of his Lancaster Street, Karori, home.
"We don't have the car keys and we don't know when the car was last used," Detective Inspector Arnerich said. "Getting sightings of Tony's car, both before and after he was killed, will help answer some important questions.
"How did Tony get around the city? Did he use his car? Was he picked up by taxis or friends? How did he get to Bunnings in Adelaide Road, Newtown, where on Thursday, 6 July he bought a ballcock at 12.13pm? That was the last known sighting of Tony. Did he use his Laser to go shopping or was he with someone else?
"We hope that by releasing these photos, someone may recall seeing the car in the city and either Tony or other people in it."
Detective Inspector Arnerich said police are yet to find Mr Stanlake's hands, clothing he was wearing on his upper body prior to his death, and personal items such as his wallet, watch or keys.
Police also appeal for further sightings of a dark blue 1995 Subaru Legacy Sedan registration DAB151, particularly in the last few weeks. This car was seized by police on Wednesday night in Wainuiomata and is being forensically examined.
"It's day eight in our homicide inquiry and we are making some excellent progress," Detective Inspector Arnerich said. "One person has been arrested and charged with murder but I'm quite convinced there are others involved.
"We've finished our scene examinations at Owhiro Bay where Tony's body was washed up last Sunday, and we've also finished at the Happy Valley Landfill," he said.
"The examinations at three houses, including the Karori property, will continue for some days yet."
