Wellington Police can now release the name of the 37-year-old Chinese female discovered on Sunday evening as Rongmei FAN, known as Mei.

Late yesterday, a post mortem was completed which has confirmed that Ms FAN had multiple injuries consistent with a violent and brutal attack.

She was last seen on Friday 8 November dropping her two children off at their local school and speaking with a teacher. It believed that the short route she took was from her Brussels Street property and along Park Road to Miramar Central School between 8.30 and 9.00am.

Police are appealing for anyone that saw Ms FAN or her vehicle, a red Honda hatchback with registration GSL128, after this time.

Ms FAN is described as short with a slim build and it is likely she was wearing a hooded crimson top with white stripes on the shoulders and plain black track pants.

Police would also like to hear from anyone who saw anything out of place or suspicious in the local area on that Friday morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant John van den Heuvel says "It is clear that this was a brutal and vicious attack that has taken the life of a young mother".

"If you saw Mei at anytime on Friday we need to hear from you. Whoever has done this has taken away the mum of two little children which, anyway you look at it, is a heartless act".

"It could be the one small thing that you have noticed that could make all the difference to holding the person responsible for this to justice".

"We are continuing to speak to a number of people and are making great progress piecing together Mei's final movements".

"I can reassure the community that there is nothing to indicate that this is anything but a one-off attack resulting in the needless loss of a young mother's life".

Anyone with any information should contact Wellington Police on (04) 381 2000 and ask to speak to the Operation Brussels team. Information can also be provided anonymously to the Crimestoppers organisation on 0800 555 111.

Please note that there are pictures of Mei FAN and her vehicle available on the Police website or by contacting Nick Bohm, Wellington District Communications Manager, on 027 559 2235.

Detective Senior Sergeant van den Heuvel will not be available until after 2.30pm this afternoon.
