Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Can I call 111 from a satellite phone?

No. Traditional satellite phones generally cannot access New Zealand's 111 emergency calling platform directly.

If you are using a traditional satellite phone and require Police assistance, call +64 9 571 2800.

This number is answered by New Zealand Police and is available for satellite phone users who are unable to access 111. It is not part of the Spark-operated 111 emergency calling service and is not an emergency services call-answering platform.

Where Police determine that Fire and Emergency New Zealand or Ambulance assistance is also required, Police will notify the appropriate emergency service and coordinate the response as necessary.

If you are using a satellite-enabled mobile phone, the emergency calling capabilities of the device will depend on the handset manufacturer, telecommunications provider, and the services available on that device. Users should check their provider's guidance before relying on a satellite-enabled mobile phone for emergency communications.
