It is now easier for members of the public to request information about a third party, if they have concerns about their own safety, or the safety of a family member or friend.
A new online form to request information, through the Family Violence Information Disclosure Scheme (FVIDS), is now available. The form can be found here.
Historically, people had to call 105 or go into a police station to request this information. Having this online form will make the process easier and safer for people who do not feel able to attend a police station in person or may feel uneasy speaking to someone over the phone.
At the same time, the Police process has been made more efficient with three forms consolidated into one, making it easier for Police staff to keep potential family harm victims safer.
“These changes aim to improve accessibility, consistency and safety for individuals and whānau seeking information through this scheme,” says Inspector Ngahiraka Latimer, acting National Manager Family Harm Prevention.
“From 19 August 2026, people seeking information will have easier access, and will be able to do so with greater privacy and safety.
“Many people do not feel comfortable attending a police station, so this is an important step in reducing barriers which prevent whānau coming to us for the help they need.”
Applicants are still able to engage through the existing channels, by calling 105 or applying in person at a police station.
