Different routes, same outcome

A pair allegedly fleeing Police face court after failing to evade officers on foot and four wheels.

At around 11.35pm on Monday, officers were conducting patrols in Papatoetoe when they identified a vehicle of interest, linked to a man who should not have been driving.

Under red and blue lights, the Mercedes Benz was signalled to stop on Great South Road, says Counties Manukau West Response Manager, Acting Senior Sergeant Joanna Hunkin.

“The driver initially followed instructions, but as an officer left the patrol car to speak with the occupants, the vehicle accelerated away.

“Officers kept observations on it as it drove at speed and allegedly executed dangerous overtaking manoeuvres.”

Patrol units lost sight of the vehicle as it headed towards Waimate Street, Ōtara but as they rounded the corner, they noticed a male walking along the footpath.

The late-night walker matched the description of the passenger seen in the vehicle.

“After sighting Police, the man attempted to flee, and a foot pursuit ensued, with a Police dog unit catching up to him on Waimate Street.

“The man was arrested, and methamphetamine and related utensils were found in his possession,” Acting Senior Sergeant Joanna Hunkin says.

Despite losing his passenger, the driver continued travelling south through Ōtara and onto State Highway 1 before exiting at Redoubt Road.

“Spikes were then successfully deployed, bringing the vehicle to a stop on Burbank Avenue, and an end to a night of dangerous driving.

“The driver was arrested without incident,” Acting Senior Sergeant Joanna Hunkin says.

A 29-year-old has appeared in Manukau District Court, charged with driving a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner, and failure to remain stopped.

A 30-year-old man also appeared in Manukau District Court, charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine utensils.
