Please attribute the following to Eastern Road Policing Manager, Acting Inspector Andy Knox:
It’s going to be a busy long weekend on Eastern District roads and Police are urging all motorists to stay safe.
With Hawke’s Bay Anniversary today and Labour Day on Monday, we have a sunny few days ahead of us across the district and a lot of people will be out and about on the roads.
If you’re driving over the long weekend, please ensure you take care of the basics — put the phone away, don’t drive while impaired by drugs/alcohol or fatigue, drive within the speed limit and at an appropriate speed for the conditions — and always wear your seatbelt!
If we all take these easy steps, it will go a long way toward everyone getting to their destinations safely over the long weekend.
And for motorists travelling on State Highway 5 near Mōhaka today, keep an eye out for our fatigue stop that we’re running alongside Roadsafe Hawke’s Bay and other road safety partners. We'll also have one on Monday on State Highway 2 in Central Hawke’s Bay.
We had over 500 cars through our fatigue stop in Wairoa yesterday, which shows there are plenty of cars on the road making their way to holiday spots.
Be patient and take your time. There’s no need to rush. And keep hydrated with this warmer weather.
We are also aware of a large tangi that is taking place in Wairoa on Saturday that may cause traffic congestion.
Drive to the conditions, always pay attention to what is around you and ensure you take regular breaks so you can give your full attention when driving so you and your family can get to your destination safely. Drive like the Police are around, because we are.
