1,000 vehicles stopped in Southern road safety campaign

1 min read

Police have conducted an operation in Southland to increase safety for all road users.

Staff stopped more than 1,000 vehicles from 4 – 7 August 2016, with a focus on reducing drink-driving.

Over the four days Police patrolled both rural and urban areas of Invercargill, and eastern and western Southland.

A number of checkpoints were set up with the Booze Bus in attendance. A number of vehicles were also stopped at random.

Acting Area Road Policing Manager for Southland, Acting Senior Sergeant Deon McNaught, says:

“While Police are very happy with the overall result, we are disappointed that eight people still willingly chose to get behind the wheel after drinking and put not only their own safety at risk, but the safety of other innocent motorists.

“It’s just not worth the risk – get a taxi home, designate a sober driver or make arrangements before you have a few drinks. Make safe travel plans before you start drinking and stick to them,”

The results of the operation are:

8 people processed for drink-driving

6 people were found to have been disqualified from driving or their licence had been suspended

3 people were found to be forbidden drivers

1 person had a Warrant to Arrest

210 infringement notices were issued
