Arson update

1 min read

Auckland City Police investigating a series of arsons overnight and the sudden death of a woman in Aotea Square, believe they might be a step closer to knowing who she is.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jon Moss said information had come to Police that suggests the woman might have been a 53 year-old Mangere resident.

&#34I hasten to add that no formal identification has been made and the earliest that will be attempted will be late tomorrow morning,&#34 Mr Moss said.

&#34While it’s gratifying to know that we might have made some progress on the investigation into who this woman was, it’s sad that whatever family and friends she might have had will be touched by a tragedy.&#34

Mr Moss said Police had not discovered anything yet that would suggest the deceased woman was or was not responsible for any of the fires Police and the NZ Fire Service attended last night.

&#34Our inquiries into the series of arsons in Auckland City last night continue and tomorrow we’ll endeavour to examine the scenes we haven’t managed to get to today.

&#34Each of the remaining scenes has a scene guard at it and we are still appealing for anyone with information about the fires to contact us at Auckland Central CIU.&#34
