Kapiti’s new police station has won the New Zealand Institute of Building James Hardie Award for the best ready mixed concrete project under $2 million.

The award to Arrow International was announced at the industry awards dinner in Auckland last Friday night.

Jonathan Leach was the project manager and Tony Doile the construction manager for the new station which was opened on 28 February 2003 by the Minister of Police George Hawkins.

The station built to replace the former Paraparaumu station on the corner of Kapiti and Rimu Roads -- was finished two weeks ahead of schedule achieved savings of $160,000 thanks to the huge support from the project management team, architects, designers, engineers, builders, sub contractors and police staff. It was designed by Opus International with Arrow International managing the project.

Superintendent John Kelly, Wellington Police District Commander, says he’s delighted the project has achieved national recognition.

&#34The station and building project is already a winner in our eyes. Industry recognition for project excellence just makes it extra special.

&#34Those involved in the project faced many challenges -- not least of which was building a replacement station on the same site without compromising policing functions.

&#34At times there was only a one metre gap between the old and the new. The fact we were able to continue our day to day policing on the coast with minimal disruption is a testimony to the project team and the Kapiti police staff.&#34
