West Auckland Police have begun a homicide inquiry after being called to a house in the suburb of Sunnyvale, where a woman had suffered fatal injuries.

A man, also believed to live at the address, had suffered critical injuries and was taken by ambulance to Auckland City Hospital. Three children at the address were unharmed and are now being cared for by others.

Police were called to the address just before midnight after being called by neighbours. A scene examination will take place today as well as a post mortem examination of the deceased woman.

Inquiries will continue throughout today to establish what happened at the address including what weapon or weapons were used.

The woman was aged 32; the man is aged 46.
