Information still being accepted for South Auckland police culture inquiry

1 min read

There is still an opportunity for people to provide information to the inquiry examining the culture of police in the Counties Manukau District.

The Commissioner of Police, Rob Robinson, has set up the inquiry in response to recent allegations regarding staff attitudes and the treatment of offenders. The inquiry is considered necessary to ensure the communities in the police district and the wider New Zealand community have confidence that inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated and incidents will be fully and independently investigated.

The inquiry is being overseen by former High Court judge, Sir David Tompkins, QC. Police staff involved have been selected from outside the Counties Manukau district.

The terms or reference to be addressed in the inquiry are; To determine whether there is evidence of a police culture that condones or encourages acts of violence or other inappropriate treatment towards prisoners, suspects or other persons in the Counties Manukau police district.

A number of options are available for members of the public, as well as serving and former members of Counties Manukau police to come forward with any information relating to the terms of reference that may assist in the inquiry.

The inquiry team want to emphasise that there is still a chance to express a view. Information can be forwarded to one of the following;
