Overnight vehicle crash Tahuna

1 min read

A man, woman and small child had a lucky escape when the car they were trying to evade Police in rolled on a rural Waikato road overnight.

Eastern Waikato Area Commander, Inspector Glenn Dunbier, said the crash happened on the Ohinewai-Tahuna Rd about 8.30pm.

"The Blue Holden Commodore had been stopped earlier at a checkpoint in Morrinsville but the driver sped off as officers went to speak to him, turning his lights off.

"Because of heavy fog the pursuit was abandoned however another patrol car at Tahuna spotted the car and a second pursuit managed by the Northern Communications Centre ensued."

As the driver headed west towards Ohinewai he lost control of his car and crashed.

"While the crash will be subject to a procedural review it appears the pursuit was managed in accordance with all established protocols."

"I think it is very fortunate the driver, his female passenger nor the young child were hurt in what appears to have been a totally avoidable crash," said Mr Dunbier.

Separate investigations are currently underway in relation to a firearm and other items located in the car at the crash scene.
